Curtis Dow Thornton was born in Canaan, Indiana on September 28, 1880, to Levi Avery Thornton and Annetta "Nettie" Bishop. Alta Rivers Gilbert was born in Vevay, Indiana sometime between March and April 1886 to Samuel Gilbert and Caroline Alice (Phillips, Babb) Gilbert.
The two were united in marriage on October 5, 1910.
Everyone loved Curtis & Alta Rivers Thornton. Together they had 6 children and 16 grandchildren, all of whom speak fondly of the couple.
Curtis Dow Thornton enlisted in the Army March 20, 1905. He was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, then the Philippines, before rounding out his time at Fort Mackenzie.
